Screening: Oriental Silk at the Fowler Museum

Wed, October 17, 2018 Fowler Museum at UCLA Dir. Xiaowen Zhu, 2015, 30 minutes Oriental Silk explores the worldview of Kenneth Wong, the owner of the first silk importing company in Los Angeles. In this intimate portrait, he shares how his parents, first-generation Chinese immigrants, realized the American dream through the store and how he came to be the owner and caretaker of the family legacy. Director Xiaowen Zhu and Kenneth Wong will participate in a Q+A following the screening.

Oriental Silk presented at USC Pacific Asia Museum

On Sunday, October 13, 2018, Xiaowen Zhu and documentary subject Kenneth Wong joined the screening of Oriental Silk, Zhu’s short film on the history of the first silk importing company in Los Angeles, at USC Pacific Asia Museum. Their conversation explored themes of cultural value and traditional craftsmanship, estrangement and homesickness, and the colors of memory.
