Zhu Xiaowen’s work, spanning video art, photography, writing, and installation, is concerned with how things and beings migrate across time (historical and temporary) and space (borders and boundaries) with a particular interest in personal witness and testimony. Having spent nearly half of her life living as a diasporic Chinese, she views herself as a flâneuse, a female equivalent to the flâneur, who encounters people, places, and objects while always on the move. Through her lens and interpretations, a multi-channel reality is unfold with tangible yet often fragmented elements, thus to communicate the complex, transcultural movements in our contemporary society. Everybody is going to move, on the move, or has moved – in this sense, everybody is a migrant. The question is, do we belong to different places at the same time? In constant movements, how do we construct a narrative that is stable enough for us to understand where we are, and yet, open enough for us to imagine where we are going?
